STATEMENT ON CHANCELLOR'S DECISION
TO COMPLY WITH ICE POLICIES
JANUARY 25, 2025
My Fellow Tar Heels,

The fact that I must write this statement is deeply unfortunate, but it comes from a place of love and support for our community. Tonight, it was announced that our chancellor intends to comply with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should they pursue any students on our campus. This decision is both disappointing and, regrettably, unsurprising. Our administration exists to support and protect its students, regardless of their background or circumstances, but, unfortunately, their stance aligns with the current federal agenda of mass deportation. It is deeply troubling that a leader within our own community has chosen to disregard the well-being of the student body and turn his back on those he is entrusted to serve.

Everyone at UNC recognizes that this is a top-tier institution, a place where students are destined to achieve great things. However, decisions like this risk standing in the way of equal opportunity for success. Every student has a right to a quality education, regardless of where they come from or who their parents are.

To my community, which remains the primary target of these policies, I send my unwavering hope and support to both you, as students, and your families. Know that you are not alone in this. Let us continue to advocate for a university that truly supports all its students and provides equal access to the education and opportunities we all deserve.

With a heart for our community,

Adolfo Alvarez
